In any legal proceeding, opposing counsel may not speak to you regarding the case once you have hired an attorney. Direct any inquiries from opposing counsel to your attorney, and do not contact opposing counsel, emergency or not.

In custody proceedings, it is best to keep a private “parenting notebook.” Dates and times of daily activities, as well as school or medical appointments and any other important events should be documented. Any concerns regarding your child’s well-being and an opposing party’s parenting should also be documented. It is advisable to keep these notes by hand. This may be provided as a record for your attorney, however if you intend to use it in court, it will be material subject to discovery by the opposing party.
